JA Green Means Cool! ®
The World is getting warmer. The rise in temperature is leading to desert expansion, more common heat waves and wildfires. Temperature rises are leading to melting glaciers and permafrost thus leading to rising sea levels. Warmer temperatures are causing increasing rates of evaporation and thus more intense storms and weather extremes.
The largest driver of Global Warming is the emission of gases that create a Greenhouse effect of which more than 90% are Carbon Dioxide and Methane. Fossil Fuel burning (Coal, Oil and Natural Gas) for energy consumption is the main source of these emissions with additional contributions from Deforestation and Forest Fires, Agriculture, and Manufacturing. The contents in Green Means Cool! explain the role of carbon in Nature and how the burning of Carbon causes gases that build up a layer of Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere which then traps in heat, thus causing the earth to get warmer. Objectives: At the end of the course students will understand Global Warming and Climate Change; their causes and the steps needed to mitigate and reverse these to ensure a healthier Planet. Students will be asked to come up with practical and personal day-to-day actions that ensure a more Sustainable Lifestyle. Contents: 6 hours duration – in classroom 6 actions have been identified to save the Planet:
